Feeling sick this cold & flu season? Univera Healthcare helps members find the right care when they need it.

As colder weather arrives and more activities move indoors, seasonal illnesses such as the flu, COVID-19, RSV, and the common cold become more prevalent. Univera Healthcare is reminding members to familiarize themselves with their health care options now, before they or a family member becomes sick.

Seeking care in the most appropriate setting can help members get treatment sooner, avoid unnecessary delays, and potentially reduce out-of-pocket expenses. Univera Healthcare offers multiple resources and care options designed to help members access quality care conveniently and efficiently.

"If you're not feeling well, your primary care provider is often the best place to start," said Dr. Lorna Fitzpatrick, chief medical officer at Univera Healthcare. "Your doctor knows your medical history, medications, and health needs, making them well-positioned to guide your care. If your provider isn't available, it's important to know the other resources available through your health plan so you can get the right care at the right time."

Choosing the Right Care Option for Your Symptoms

Primary Care Physician (PCP)

For symptoms such as fever, cough, congestion, sore throat, body aches, or ear discomfort, members should begin by contacting their primary care provider. Many practices offer same-day visits, virtual appointments, or after-hours guidance. Parents are encouraged to call their child's pediatrician, who can help evaluate symptoms and recommend the appropriate next steps.

24/7 Nurse Call Line

Members have access to a registered nurse 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 1-877-222-1240 (TTY 711). Nurses can answer health questions, discuss symptoms or medications, and help determine the most appropriate care setting.

Telemedicine

Virtual care provides members with convenient access to board-certified health care professionals using a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Telemedicine can be an effective option for a variety of non-emergency conditions, including colds, flu symptoms, sinus infections, and other common illnesses, all with the convenience of not having to leave your home.

Urgent Care

Urgent care centers are a good option when members need prompt medical attention for non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries and are unable to see their primary care provider. Many locations offer walk-in services as well as extended evening and weekend hours.

Emergency Room

Emergency departments should be used for severe or potentially life-threatening conditions, such as chest pain, significant difficulty breathing, major trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, or signs of stroke. Last year, about 1 in 4 ER visits for Univera Healthcare members was for an ailment that could have been treated by a primary care or urgent care provider.

Take Steps Now to Be Prepared Before Illness Strikes

Univera Healthcare encourages members to:

  • Stay current on recommended vaccinations, including flu and COVID-19 vaccines.
  • Identify the nearest in-network urgent care center before you need care.
  • Keep telemedicine and nurse call line contact information readily available.
  • Establish care with a primary care provider if you do not already have one.
  • Familiarize yourself with your health plan benefits and care options.

Understanding the different ways to access care can help members receive timely treatment while supporting appropriate use of health care resources. By choosing the right care setting for their needs, members can help ensure emergency departments remain available for patients experiencing serious medical emergencies.
